We only have one square foot of carrots left, since we pulled all the other slow growing carrots about a month ago. We pulled one of the few remaining ones this weekend to see if the micro carrots benefited from the extra month at all. It looks like the extra time helped this carrot's girth a bit, but not its length. I continue to be unimpressed with these carrots...
Here are the first two ripe Jelly Bean tomatoes. One is much larger than the other, but they both ripened at the same time. I was hoping for more than just two, but these were the only ones ready this weekend. The tomatoes had fairly thick skin for grape tomatoes and the flavor was on the sweeter side of tomatoes.
We still have many more Jelly Bean tomatoes at various stages of ripeness and dozens of flower clusters on our four experimental Jelly Bean tomato plants. These were started late this summer after we built our indoor grow box. I'm hoping that there are enough warm days left in the season for a good majority of these tomatoes to ripen. The weather has been rather inconsistent lately. After months of brutally hot summer, it got cold really fast a few weeks ago, but now it's getting hot again, and we're expecting a high of 95F this Tuesday. I'm sure the tomatoes are just as confused as I am.
The last part of our tiny harvest this week consists of herbs: basil, oregano and thyme. Keith used these herbs plus lots of other spices and seasonings to make a rub for his roasted pork loin. It became Sunday dinner with my leftover spaetzle. If you've never had the pleasure of tasting homemade spaetzle (no, that stuff from a box doesn't count!), I invite you to view my Homemade Spaetzle Recipe post for pictures on how to make this delicious German noodle dish. You may even be inspired to make it yourself. If you do, you won't regret it!

You know, I think all of my tomatoes were thicker skinned this year, and they had a rather watery taste, too. Very unusual. Normally the flavors are excellent, and I've never noticed thick skins on any of them.
I've never seen a carrot with a comb-over before. The spaetzle and pork look great!
I hope the weather will be warm enough for those tomatoes to ripen. But if not, you can harvest them green and have them turn red indoors.
Granny - I'm just going to have to take your word for it, because this is my first year growing tomatoes!

Vic - Are you making fun of my oldie of a carrot? :-) I guess that's what happens when they stay in the ground for over 4 months. And this Short 'n Sweet variety supposedly has a 63 day maturity! Ha.

vrtlarica - I really hope so, too! But if frost threatens before that, then I will definitely harvest these green and hope for successful indoor ripening.
If you get a long enough streak of hot weather - those tomatoes will rush to maturity for you as they will definitely ripen with heat.
I have never heard of jelly bean tomatoes, I have learned so much from all the other bloggers. I harvested the last of my tomatoes green, and they are starting to ripen in the house now.

Thank you for the spaetzle recipe. I love making home-made noodles, so I will be giving this a try.
I'd say that carrot is a bit of an eye opener. I've not tried growing carrots. Too few containers for me to attempt them. So many people seem to be unhappy with their yield.
The name jelly bean tomatoes is new to me too.
Have you ever tasted Sun Gold yellow cherry type? If not you must give them a try as anyone who does always plants them again. They are the sweetest little toms. around.
drool. those recipes look delish!
Cute toms.
:)
Jelly beans really start coming in all at once, as you're beginning to see. They sure are tasty little things, too!
The weather's been crazy down in So. IN too. What we really need is some rain.
My carrot sizes vary a lot too. I've had good luck with Yaya and Mokum, but even then carrots are not my best crop.
It looks just delicious. I'm glad you got your first couple of tomatoes. I know tomatoes are the hope of every gardener.
I love your carrot! I now only grow carrots for their tops to feed to my bunnies! No luck with carrots here in Central Florida.
I have missed reading your blog. Hopefully, things will slow down for me soon. Those tomatoes look so good!! I hope that the warm weather will have the rest of the tomatoes turning red for you to enjoy!!
kitsapFG - I hope the heat isn't too much for the tomatoes. I have read that hot temps over 85F or so actually prevents tomatoes (and other veggies) from further growing and ripening.

Sense of Home - I learn all kinds of new things from other bloggers all the time! Jelly Bean tomatoes are a type of grape tomatoes, and they are a F1 hybrid.

martha - I've never made normal homemade noodles, but I love making (and eating) spaetzle. I hope you enjoy it, too, when you try the recipe!

Sherri B. - I have not tried Sun Gold yet, but I have read enough rave reviews about them from other bloggers that I will have to find some seeds for next year. Thanks for the reminder!

Stevie - Thank you!

EG - I hope you're right about the Jelly Beans. I can't wait to get my first handful (or more)!

villager - Rain? What's that? We've had so little of that up in central IN this summer, too. I'm pretty discouraged by Indiana carrot growing at the moment, but I really want to try to grow them better next year.

Daphne - Thank you! My only other tomatoes this year were Early Girls, and it's been a while since we pulled those plants up for various diseases.
* * * * *
Melissa - You might be the only one who loves my carrot! :-)

debieclegg - I missed seeing your comments and posts, too! Keith just told me that the orange tomatoes (pictured above) have already turned mostly red today, so I should have more ripe tomatoes by this weekend.
Well that carrot is a sight cuter than mine was. We have lots of green tomatoes and flowers on our plants too. I'm hoping for a few more weeks of warm autumn before the fall into cooling temperatures.
Ottawa Gardener - I guess cute is not bad, but I want some bulk from my carrots! I hope your warm autumn lasts long enough for all those green tomatoes to ripen. I had no idea that fall would be such an anxious time waiting for the last of the summer vegetables to ripen.

Hello this is kind of of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code
with HTML. I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!
