In addition to decorating the house for Halloween last weekend, Keith and I finished building the remaining two raised boxes for the new garden. They are not filled yet - that's this weekend's project. If you'd like to see some "before" and "in-progress" pictures, please see my post on Building New Raised Garden Beds.
You can see in this picture that the ground slopes down from right to left. To level the raised beds, we had to dig trenches in the higher side of the ground for each of the beds, which was very difficult with the hard clay soil. Now that's all done, I hope I never have to dig any part of this garden ever again! Well... unless I decide to build more raised garden beds. I can already hear Keith yelling "NO MORE RAISED BEDS!!!"

That is a lot of garden space! You will be able to grow quite a bit of food in it next year. Have you decided what you are going to put between the beds...mulch or stone?
Great job Keith!!
They look fantastic! I love how you can just stroll down the whole length of the garden - my boxes are just willy nilly all over the place LOL!
Robin - I know, I'm so excited about the extra garden space for next year! I should have plenty of garden harvest, as long as the pests don't get to them before me! I'm thinking of just putting some straw down between the beds to keep weeds from growing, but I haven't fully made up my mind yet. The beds first and then I'll move on to the aesthetics. :)

Erin - thank you! This was pretty much the only option to maximize the growing space, given the dimensions of this side yard.
Oh boy, I can't wait to see them in action! Filling them is gonna make Keith definitely scream NO MORE BEDS!!!! hehe...It's alot of work!
Looks great. We also had to dig trenches, but in sandy soil. Much easier. Lots of great new beds!
Wow! I am so excited for you and all of that new gardening space. You are going to spend all Winter plotting and planning on how you are gong to fill that up. I can't wait to read about it.
Wow! You are going to love your new beds. You'll probably have them filled many times over during the planning stage, and will have to cut back to just get everything in. Better make more beds, just to be sure you have enough space!! Congrats, you'll love them! I made raised beds this past Spring (well, actually my hubby did!) and I put cardboard down before I filled them, and also in the walkways. Helped tons with the weeds.

EG - it will be even worse because we can't pull the truck up to these last two boxes. There will be lots of shoveling and wheelbarrowing, that's for sure. I'll be helping Keith as much as I can!

Stefaneener - thank you!

Lexa - thank you! I'm really excited about planning it all out this winter. I have high expectations for next year!

Lori - I'll probably put cardboard down under the straw in the pathway. I used newspaper inside the other beds under the soil. I'm already on plan number three or four in terms of what I want to plant where. :)
It's really coming along now! I'm so excited for you. I'll have a new bed this year as well so we will have to post our plans and compare! ;-)
You can never have enough raised beds. There's always room to squeeze one more in...
Hahahahha, Keith sounds like my husband. We've been also super busy with making raised beds!! It's so much work!
Martha Stewart likes to put down grass clippings between her beds according to a clip I just watched (all mine go in the compost). I love the new beds, you are going to have one serious garden next year!!
Those beds look beautiful. Congrats. I look forward to reading about the harvests that come from those beds. I love my raised beds. Happy gardening.

The garden beds look great!
Barbie - ohh yes, definitely! Compare and contrast and LEARN! :)

TIG - I'm thinking that our neighbor doesn't seem to have any good use for their side and back yard...

meemsnyc - it really is a lot of work, but hopefully the increased growing space is all worth the effort!

Kelly - We just recycle the grass clippings in place, but I might consider that next year!

Anna - thank you so much!

Jeana - thank you!
What an awesome new space! I can't wait to see what you guys end up doing with it!!
Holly - thank you! I can't wait to see the boxes all filled up next year, too! Now I just have to decide what all to grow.
I did a search and found your blog - love your raised beds. Thanks for explaining all the details - I want to put raised beds in our garden this season. Thanks again,
Paula from Idaho
