First Sign of Life

"Hey come look, there's something really exciting in the kitchen!"

Keith dragged me out of bed this morning and made me put on my glasses ("you need your eyes for this").  I guess he didn't want me wasting any time putting in my contacts, and well, I am pretty much blind without my contacts or glasses.  He made me stand in front of the kitchen sink and I thought maybe there was a nasty bug or something in the sink.

"Look out the window!"

I looked, and I saw my raised boxes still covered with snow, albeit less snow than yesterday.  Huh?

"LOOK!"

And then I saw it.

Sign of life from the supermarket garlic I planted last Halloween!  I can't believe these things really stayed alive underneath an average of a foot of snow for the last three months.

  3. YAY! I forgot to plant mine last fall, so I'm going to try spring planted garlic and shallots this year. I hope the weather is good enough to get a bed prepared soon!

Glad you're back blogging with us :-)

  4. I always count on the fall planted garlic to give me that shot of spring tonic during the last gasp days of winter when my cabin fever is getting to an unbearable point. They never cease to amaze me in how tough they are and how encouraging they look poking up through the last snows of the year. :D

  10. Exciting!! Mine are still buried under the snow. Last fall, I got one bulb from farmers market and planted them for the first time. We'll see how they do in MN weather!

Glad you're blogging! Always love reading your blogs.

  11. Great blog! Love the garlic.. I guess I should go check mine too! I'm also in zone 5b - just a bit further north. We used to live in Louisville though, so we've been to Indy plenty of times.. gorgeous place!

  12. That is so cool. I still have over 3 feet of snow on my raised beds. I can't wait to see if my garlic made it through the winter. :)

  13. Congrats to you! The snow actually provides a "warm" blanket from the freezing temperatures. We're expecting some form of Spring anyday now... something besides the fresh snow that falls and then melts the following day.

  15. Like you, I love the thrill of seeing the first green poking through the garden in the spring. My mom was the same way. She would start her daily crocus patrol in February every year, even though they don't typically bloom until mid-March in Indiana.
