Sugar Snap Peas in California vs. Indiana

Back in early May, I visited my mom in Southern CA and sowed a few sugar snap peas in her small side yard.  Later that same week, I sowed more of the same peas - yes, I traveled with my seed envelope - here in our garden in Indiana.  Fast forward two months, and take a look at the difference between the two pea patches:

Indiana peas:

and California peas:

Our Indiana peas never really had a chance, what with the wild bunnies first nibbling the seedlings down to sad little nubs, and then getting toasted extra crispy in this heat in the last month or so.  I got two whole sugar snap peas out of my 16 plants last week.

The California peas, on the other hand, have been enjoying the unusually cool spring/summer weather for the last two months, and there are no wild bunnies in my mom's densely populated urban neighborhood.  I'm told that the pea vines have been growing like mad, already outgrowing the 4-foot trellis and reaching for the sky.

I know now that early May is too late to sow peas here in Indiana.  I will definitely start earlier next spring.

Actually, fall peas might grow better for you. Why don't you stick a few seeds in around August 1-15? Might be worth it to experiment.

That is very small harvest for 16 pea plants. I directly sowed my peas in March, they dont care too much about the frost.

I had never considered sowing peas in the fall! I just love my peas in the spring/summer, so maybe I'll give fall peas a try. Isn't it great to learn new things?

Granny, I've been thinking about sowing fall peas. I can't wait for this heat to pass so I can finally start planting some cool season veggies again!

vrtlarica, I KNOW! I so wish I had more peas. If you click to zoom in on my California peas, you can see all sugar snap peas ready to be harvested. I can't believe my mom has so many, and I only had two. I'm surprised to hear that your peas didn't care for frost. If they can be planted before the last frost date in spring, aren't they supposed to be able to withstand some frost?

Lori, let's try fall peas together this year!

I live in Indy, too, and my peas were lousy this year. I planted them in March. The weather got so warm so quickly this spring that I don't think it matters much that you planted your peas in May.

Hi Katie, sorry to hear that your peas also didn't do well, but it sounds like there was almost no way to grow peas well this spring in Indy. Are you planning on planting a fall crop? I think I'll try a fall crop of peas and see how they do.

I think that pea seeds can survive frost, but once they germinate it is harder for them to survive.

vrtlarica, now that makes sense. I do remember reading something about how peas (and some other seeds) can wait patiently through frosty weather until it's the right time for them to germinate and start growing.

Jess - I know, I'm sorry! It was a really short busy weekend - Mother's Day weekend - and I figured everyone else was probably busy then, too.
